Guyana Floods - Regional Update

The REO pointed out that in Matarkai, rain, resulting in a number of pools of water in areas, has been preventing mining from taking place. Farmlands have been slightly affected as well. However, other areas have not been experiencing such a problem.  

 
Flood Situation Expected Under Control Within A Week

Concomitantly, the floodwaters on the East Coast of Demerara dropped by a foot. However, operator error at the sluice gate in Triumph caused saltwater to flow into the Beterverwagting/Triumph area but the damage was minimal. The two attendants who left the gate open were fired and replaced by four citizen volunteers until the attendants are replaced.  

 
Prime Minister Hinds Dismisses Discrimination Charges

Some sections of the society have also made claims of discrimination. However, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds said that these accusations have no substance. He said that he understands the concerns of those persons who have not received aid but he is unhappy with those persons who peddle these claims for political reasons.

 
Guyana Flood Waters Recede Amid Finger Pointing

It should come as no surprise, therefore, that there would be accusations and counter-accusations from leaders and supporters of the country’s political parties. The PNCR issued its response to the Flood Situation and the Prime Minister said the accusations were unfounded

Abdel Wright To Perform At The Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival

Abdel’s hard work and determination began to pay off quite recently, gaining awareness from some heavy hitters in the music industry. He was invited to perform at the 46664 Nelson Mandela AIDS Concert in 2003 with Bono and U2, Peter Gabriel and Ladysmith Black Mombazo, as he joined the effort to raise global awareness in the fight against AIDS.  

 
United States Aid Arrives

Two more experts from USAID’s Office of Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) have joined the team already here. They are working with the Joint Operations Command and other organizations to advise and coordinate relief efforts.

Since the 1990s many West Indian Americans, who actually come from many racial /ethnic lineages-African, Chinese, East Indian, Portuguese, Amerindian for example - present multiple identity formations such as: West Indian, with a strong ethnic orientation; African American, with a focus on their racial identity; and West Indian American, with a more hybrid cultural identity as hyphenated Americans.
